Making your business safe from fire is a big responsibility and it hopefully means that you have portable fire extinguishers installed in all the right places around your building. If not yet, then we can help you with that.

Although completing the purchase and installation may seem like your work is done, there are a few more considerations to ensure you, your business and employees are safe.

Regular inspection and maintenance are very important to ensure your fire extinguisher is fully functional when you need it. And then… that brings us to the topic of discussion in this blog…disposal and what to do if your fire extinguisher is expired.

Well certain brands, in fact most of them, do not expire. They
must have a 6-year maintenance and then a 12-year hydrostatic test, provided that the fire extinguisher doesn’t have any dents or rust or something like that.

There are a few of the Kidde brands that have a 12-year shelf life and they will require disposal. And if your fire extinguishers are ever used, then they do have to be disposed of. 

Now you can’t just go and throw them into the dumpster. You are not supposed to do that. They are considered hazardous materials and high-pressure chemicals can be very dangerous if mishandled. If you have an old, damaged or expired extinguisher, you need to take the fire extinguisher to somebody that can dispose of them properly. 

So, call your local guy or someone around that can take care of that for
you at a hazardous waste disposal facility.
